چکیده
The percentage of dark. light, and intermediate osteons and their fragments. a\ seen in polarized light, was determined for 53 cross-sections of emhalmed, adult human bone. Dark osteons have collagen fibers predominantly parallel with the long axis of the osteon while in light osteons the fibers are at a sharp angle to the long axis of the osteon. Intermediate osteons

Relative Effects of Collagen Fiber Orientation, Mineralization, Porosity, and Percent and Population Density of Osteonal Bone on Equine Cortical Bone Mechanical Properties in Mode-specific Loading
INTRODUCTION Predominant collagen fiber orientation (CFO) can significantly influence the mechanical properties of cortical bone (e.g., Martin and Ishida, 1989; Martin and Broadman, 1993; Riggs et al., 1993). Previous studies have demonstrated that CFO is a strong predictor of tensile, compressive, or bending strength. Few of these studies, however, have examined the relative effects of CFO, m...
متن کاملPreferred collagen fiber orientation in the human mid-shaft femur.
Collagen fiber orientation is one aspect of the microstructure of bone that influences its mechanical properties. While the spatial distribution of preferentially oriented collagen is hypothesized to reflect the effects of loading during the process of aging, its variability in a modern human sample is essentially unknown. In a large sample (n = 67) of autopsied adults, the variability of colla...
متن کاملAn investigation of the effects of osteoporosis, impact intensity and orientation on human femur injuries: a parametric finite element study
Objective: Femur is the strongest, longest and heaviest bone in the human body. Due to the great importance of femur in human body, its injury may cause large numbers of disabilities and mortality. Considering various effective parameters such as mechanical properties, geometry, loading configuration, etc. can propel the study to the trustable results.. Methods: A 3D finite element model of the...
متن کاملThe influence of collagen fiber orientation and other histocompositional characteristics on the mechanical properties of equine cortical bone.
This study examined relative influences of predominant collagen fiber orientation (CFO), mineralization (% ash), and other microstructural characteristics on the mechanical properties of equine cortical bone. Using strain-mode-specific (S-M-S) testing (compression testing of bone habitually loaded in compression; tension testing of bone habitually loaded in tension), the relative mechanical imp...
